Baby Black Bird

Last week we discovered a baby bird barely alive beneath a tree in the back yard. After watching to see if the mother bird would try and care for it, and with our two dogs circling, we decided to care for the baby bird ourselves. Trip was elated. I warned that the bird might not make it, but he insisted that it be "his baby bird" and that he would take care of it.

First, the bird was named Jackson. But Trip decided that was too weird of a name. Then it became Mickey, as in Mickey Mouse. And after much thought, he named it "Baby Black Bird". Because that's what it was.

Trip fed Baby Black Bird from a dropper every 15 minutes and helped to change out his bedding every hour or so. He perked up and seemed like he would make a full recovery. It was all I could do to keep him from sleeping with the baby bird that first night.

Late the following day, Baby Black Bird refused to eat. Soon its breathing became slower and its movements weaker. I explained to Trip that it's really hard for a baby bird to live without its mom. We made plans to take the bird to a wildlife animal shelter nearby, but it wasn't open until the next day.

Eventually, the baby bird stopped breathing. It was really so sad to see this helpless animal slowly pass. But the hardest part was watching my sweet, animal-loving, 4-year-old struggle to understand death. He was so heartbroken. He had really grown attached to this baby bird and with tear-filled eyes kept telling me, "I just wish I could hold him one more time."

We talked about death and life. How all things die. I tried to explain in terms he could understand that even though our bodies cannot live forever, God has prepared a place for us to go when we die where we will have eternal bodies that will never die. We talked about heaven. A place with no more pain and suffering. We talked about Jesus. We cried, we hugged.

As I sat with the kids waiting for them to fall asleep that night, my mind was filled with thoughts of my own childhood and struggling to understand that my dad had passed away. I was 9 and it was such a strange concept to think I would never see him again in this life. I thought about my little sister and my brothers and I grieved for all of us all over again.

I'm always caught off guard when the feelings of that time of my life creep back in. But explaining Heaven to Trip was also a sweet reminder that God is good. Because of His grace and His love for me, I have an eternal hope. In this life there is death and pain and sadness. But there is a place where all of that disappears and we get to spend eternity surrounded by God's goodness and glory.

I was reminded of the song Jesus I Come.

  • Out of my bondage, sorrow and night,
    Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
    Into Thy freedom, gladness, and light,
    Jesus, I come to Thee;
    Out of my sickness, into Thy health,
    Out of my want and into Thy wealth,
    Out of my sin and into Thyself,
    Jesus, I come to Thee.
    1. Out of my shameful failure and loss,
      Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
      Into the glorious gain of Thy cross,
      Jesus, I come to Thee;
      Out of earth’s sorrows, into Thy balm,
      Out of life’s storms and into Thy calm,
      Out of distress to jubilant psalm,
      Jesus, I come to Thee.
    2. Out of unrest and arrogant pride,
      Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
      Into Thy blessed will to abide,
      Jesus, I come to Thee;
      Out of myself to dwell in Thy love,
      Out of despair, into raptures above,
      Upward for aye on wings like a dove,
      Jesus, I come to Thee.
    3. Out of the fear and dread of the tomb,
      Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
      Into the joy and light of Thy home,
      Jesus, I come to Thee;
      Out of the depths of ruin untold,
      Into the peace of Thy sheltering fold,
      Ever Thy glorious face to behold,
      Jesus, I come to Thee.

    Meeting Harper

    Last weekend we were so thankful for the opportunity to fly to Missouri to meet my sister's baby girl, Harper Elizabeth-Leigh Thompson. We had anticipated the weekend for a long time (especially me and Trip), and as soon as it came it was gone. I can't wait to hold her again at my other sister's wedding in a couple of weeks.

    I knew that Trip would be fantastic with his new cousin after proving to be such a gentle and loving big brother to Wills. We arrived to my parents house first, and he insisted that we wait in the front yard for my sister, her husband, and Harper to arrive. I can't believe what a patient 4-year-old he was.

    Trip was first to hold Harper. He clearly did not want to let anyone else hold her!

    Anna Kate did surprisingly well with Harper. She showed very little interest in Wills as a newborn, but it's funny how 7 months of age have changed her. She is so grown up now. She was gentle and sweet with Harper. Here they are in their (first of many) matching outfits courtesy of Cupcake.

    We wanted to get a picture to show the size difference between these two cousins, and this one doesn't really show accurately how much bigger Wills is because Harper is in front of him. She really is very tiny and it was like holding a feather compared to my big boy! It is so fun to have these two so close in age, and likely the same year in school. I am sure Wills will get Harper into lots of trouble!

    We wanted to get a picture of all 4 cousins together to give to my mom for her birthday. We had such grand intentions! Out of about 100 pictures, this was the best we could do. Trip was making faces, Anna Kate was tired and refused to smile, Harper was a little overwhelmed by her big cousins, and then of course there was Wills who was perfect and smiled for the camera the whole time!
    I was able to snap a few more sweet moments between Trip and Harper once he stopped being a goof!

    We are all so happy to have had a whole weekend with little Harper and cannot wait until the next time we are all together at Thanksgiving. It's crazy to think that Wills will be one year old, and Harper will be 6 months! These tiny ones become big ones so so quickly. And even though I am grateful for the time we have together, my heart longs for it to be more often.

    Anna, Matt, and Harper ... We love you!

    Baby Dedication

    A friend snapped these pictures at Wills' baby dedication at our church. I love the picture these paint... We were rushed getting out the door for church and my hair was still damp, the kids had stayed up late camping the night before and were obviously tired! At one point, our pastor said something about J being an example of strength for Wills, and on cue, Wills ripped the top off of the flower J was holding! Shortly after, Anna Kate decided that things were taking too long, and decided to lay down on the stage. Trip turned and asked me "How much longer is this going to be? It's taking so long!"

    The Thursday Boys

    [Zac]

    [Campbell]

    We have gotten into the routine of having two of Trip's friends, Zac and Campbell, over to play on Thursdays. Both boys are a year (plus) older than Trip and VERY adventurous. This has it's pros and cons, but I have loved seeing Trip try new things and take more risks.

    As my first-born, Trip tends to be cautious until he is certain that he can accomplish the activity safely. Once he is confident, he is fairly adventuresome. These "big" friends of his just go for it!

    The activity lately has been tree climbing. Zac has fallen out of a tree twice, and Campbell has cut his hand trying to tear off a tree branch. Neither shed a tear. I have a feeling that when Trip encounters his first tree-related injury, it will be a blog post of its own!

    These boys make me smile. They keep me on my toes. And the definitely make me nervous!

    8 months

    Since I just posted his 7 month update, I feel like there is not much to "update" about. I just thought I'd use the opportunity to post these precious pictures of him.

    7 Months

    Oh, this boy makes me happy! He is so sweet and cuddly, and has such a great belly laugh!

    At 7 months...
    Wills can almost sit unsupported
    He eats food 2 times a day, but still doesn't care much for it
    Is STILL teething....but no teeth yet
    A great sleeper at night and during naps
    Has started expressing some opinions - Grunts or yells at Trip when he is being too rough.
    Wills is such a pincher! He especially likes getting those little hairs at the bottom of my hair line.
    Still wants to put everything in his mouth
    Loves to jump in his jumperoo or with J holding him on the bed
    Like his brother, he loves being tossed in the air (something AK has always hated!)

    In the labor and delivery room after Wills was born, J and I agreed that he resembled my little brother Timmy. As he has grown and changed, I see glimpses of my grandpa, my dad's dad, "Poppy" in him. Especially when he smiles. I remember that when Timmy was little, everyone said he looked like our Poppy too. I just think it is so sweet that Wills is taking after my dad's side of the family considering his namesake. His middle name, Randal, is after my dad. When Wills smiles, my heart swells with gratitude for the little reminder of my dad and grandpa.

    2 years

    (I love this picture, taken on my phone, because I was asking her how old she had turned. She obviously thinks she is much older than 2!)

    It feels like Anna Kate has been 2 for such a long time. At about 18 months, she started walking and talking. She gave up her pacifier independently, just handing it to me one night while I rocked her and saying she didn't want it anymore. Around the same time she decided that she wanted to start going potty like her big brother, not in her diaper. I objected to this because with a newborn I was not about to start potty training. But, since then she typically goes #2 on the potty.

    I know that I am biased, but I am telling you, this girl is smart. She counts to 15, sometimes 20. She knows her ABC's, and recognizes about 10 different letters and knows their sounds. She is really good at matching colors. Even obscure shades that I don't think Trip can tell the difference between. She likes to build blocks, line her trains or dolls up in a line, play with her princess castle, and she LOVES to swing. How is it that 2-year-olds could swing for an entire day and not get sick?!? I remember Trip being the same way.

    At 2 years old, Anna Kate can express her emotions better than most adults I know. She feels emotions so strongly. She will look at me with tears in her eyes and say, "I am so so sad." Or with a look of anger and grunt, "I am SO SO mad!" Or she will have a face of pure joy and with a huge grin say, "I am SOOOO Happy!" Everything is "So So ...." or "Soooooo..."

    She started doing gymnastics with Trip when she turned 2, and loves it! She had been watching him from the sidelines for so long, that when I told her one day that she could go with him, she was thrilled. She loves looking through books and also watching TV (unfortunately). She asks me all of the time to "watch a show on the iPad". And she is persistent! Asking sweetly about a hundred times with a look on her face like she is only asking for the first time.

    Around her second birthday, Anna Kate started sleeping in a big girl bed, which has proven more difficult lately. Last night she snuck out of bed and was silently sitting legs crossed at the end of the hallway holding a baby doll and watching whatever show J had on the TV... Probably Duck Dynasty!

    My sweet, strong girl,

    You know what you think and what you want, and you will not be moved. My prayer is that this quality will make you a warrior for Christ. That you will stand strong in your faith, proclaiming His truth. That you will fight for the oppressed. I pray that the Holy Spirit will use your strong will to help you to resist temptation and stand strong in your convictions.
    I am so excited to watch you grow and learn and change into the woman God made you to be. You are fascinating to me, amazing, and beautiful.

    Your Dad and I love you SO SO much!
